Math in the Library with Mrs. Trott & Miss Roque

Blog submitted by Miss Roque:

Students in Ms. Roque’s 4th grade math class are currently working on ordering and comparing decimals.  On Wednesday, October 1, students furthered their investigation with decimals by going to the library.

Students located decimals on the spines of the books.  After finding this, there was guided discovery towards understanding the Dewey Decimal System with a goal of understanding that the more decimal present; the more specific the topic is within a given subject matter.

Once the students learned about the Dewey Decimal System, they were given a stack of books each with a different call number. The call numbers had the same whole number, but the decimal place value ranged from the tenths place to the thousandths place.   As a table group, they had to order the decimals from least to greatest.

Once this activity was finished, students then had to show their understanding of decimal place value by putting one of their books at their table back on the library book shelves.

Students left the library saying, “This was the best math class ever!  I feel like I really understand decimals better!”
