2nd Grade Strategies in Action

Blog by Amy Morton, Instructional Coach

2nd Grade students begin language arts each day by setting specific reading and writing goals.  The goals help the students focus on exactly what they will do to become better readers and writers.  This keeps the students attentive to a learning target during independent work times while the teacher pulls reading groups.  Goals range from remembering punctuation at the end of sentences to practicing “Stop and I Remember” while reading.  Rather than reading and writing simply because the teacher asked them to do so, students are reading and writing to master targets they set for themselves.   They are able to write and verbalize their learning targets each day!
