Kilmer Middle School Upcoming Curriculum Events

Message from Sarah Fontana, Director of Student Services, Kilmer Middle School:

Good afternoon,

Kilmer Middle School is hosting the following curriculum events in preparation for the 2016-2017 school year.  We ask that you please share these dates with your communities.

Wednesday, January 13 at 6:00pm – KMS Advanced Academic Night

The target audience for this event are parents and students who are currently eligible to receive Level IV services at Kilmer Middle School next school year. This event is not a replacement for our rising seventh grade curriculum night scheduled for Thursday, February 11. The purpose of this presentation is to specifically focus on the Advanced Academic Program at Kilmer Middle School.

Thursday, February 11, 6:00-7:30 pm – KMS Rising 7th grade Curriculum Night

Further details about curriculum night and access to our 2016-2017 course catalog will be shared with elementary schools and available on the Kilmer website after the winter break.

Additional Transition Activities include:

Tuesday, January 19, 1:00-2:30 – KMS Spring Registration Transition Meeting

Similar to last school year, we would like to invite all sixth grade teams from the Marshall Pyramid, including Wolftrap, to attend this meeting. This includes elementary school counselors, sixth grade lead teachers and new teachers, ESOL lead teachers, and reading specialists are all invited. Special education case managers are welcome to attend, but will receive more information about transition IEPs and course options at a later date. Elementary school counselors from Louise Archer, Great Falls, Forestville, and Colvin Run, our feeder elementary schools for the Advanced Academic Level IV program are also requested to attend this meeting.

Our goal for this transition meeting is to provide sixth grade teams with new knowledge about middle school curriculum and 2016-2017 course options in order to communicate appropriate course recommendations to sixth grade students and their parents that reflect a student’s academic abilities, strengths, and interests. A calendar invite will be sent to elementary school counselors and sixth grade teams with further information about the format for this meeting. Last January, we had over 70 people in attendance at this transition meeting and received great feedback from participants to help guide our planning for this year.

February 1 -12 – Kilmer School Counselors will visit all feeder elementary schools

The purpose of this visit is for KMS counselors to meet with sixth grade students attending Kilmer to discuss course selections for middle school. Kilmer school counselors and elementary school counselors will work together to coordinate this date.

If you have any further questions about our upcoming events, please let me know.

Thank you

Sarah Fontana
