4th Grade Explores Jamestown!

Blog by Miss Roque, 4th Grade:

On Friday, April 4, 2014, fourth graders explored Jamestown.  Students were able to connect what they have learned in the classroom to their hands on experiences.

We toured the Powhatan Village where we saw Powhatan people making stew on an open fire, created leather from an animal hide using a shell to peel off the fur, and went inside a typical Powhatan family home that had furs all over and a fire pit in the center to smoke meat for the winter months.

We also toured the one of the three ships (the Susan Constant, the Godspeed, and the Discovery) that Captain Christopher Newport sailed on to Jamestown in 1607.  Students were able to embark on the Susan Constant and see what ship life was really like for settlers who journeyed here for four long months!  Once students disembarked, they were encountered by a sailor who taught student the importance of tying a good knot while sailing.

Students also toured the triangular Jamestown Fort.  They were able to see the church where the first General Assembly met, the storehouse, and a gentlemen’s home.  The best part, at least by the students’ reactions and comments, was witnessing a settler shoot off a musket!

Once we finished at the Jamestown Colony, we got on the bus, went down the road a bit to the Glasshouse by the beach.  Students were amazed at the sight of how the settlers made glass from sand and witnessed a settler making glass trinkets to sell.

It was a great day and we had lots of fun!
